When vacationing in Tuscany nobody thinks about skiing at first, but there are quite a few attractive ski areas in the mountains of the hinterland that invite you to have fun in the snow in the winter months. Because while it is green and mild even in winter on the Mediterranean coast and in the Mediterranean hilly landscapes of Tuscany, enough snow falls on the high mountains of the Apennines for winter sports. Holidaymakers have the choice of several ski areas that can be reached for a day trip or through accommodation directly on site.
For a skiing holiday in Tuscany
The center for ski holidays in Tuscany is the well-known winter sports resort Abetone in the middle of the Apennine Mountains. Located at an altitude of almost 1.400 meters and surrounded by the highest peaks in the mountains, alpine conditions already prevail here. There are guaranteed snow runs from December to early April around the striking peak of Monte Cimone, the highest mountain in the Tuscan Apennines Skiing. Here, 22 lifts with 30 km of slopes of all levels of difficulty ensure carefree winter sports fun up to 2.000 meters high. From the peaks there are wide views of the sea and the islands of Corsica and Elba. Abetone is considered a traditional holiday resort with hotels of all categories and price ranges and was already the birthplace of well-known Italian ski racers.
Skiing on a real volcano
But a skiing holiday in Tuscany is also possible outside of the Apennines. Further south near Siena the beckons Mount Amiata with ski lifts and slopes. The volcanic mountain, which is visible from afar and is 1.738 meters high, is covered in deep snow in the winter months, and the snow often remains until spring. Monte Amiata is a worthwhile destination, especially for holidaymakers in southern Tuscany, as the region is still very original and not overcrowded. The manageable ski area is an ideal day trip destination from Siena or Grosseto
